FM/BG-591 - What is a Situation report (SITREP)?

A Situation Report (SITREP) is a quick and standardised way for a unit to communicate its current status to a superior element. It gives leaders the information they need to make informed decisions and adjust plans if necessary.

A SITREP informs higher command of:

  • Position – Where you are.
  • Activity – What your unit is doing.
  • Threat – What the enemy is doing (level of contact or significant observations).
  • Status – Whether you need any assistance and your effectiveness

Maintaining brevity and clarity helps ensure situational awareness, better coordination, and prompt support if needed.

FM/BS-817 - Requesting a SITREP or responding to a request for a SITREP

Requesting a SITREP

A SITREP is requested by a superior element from a subordinate element as follows:

SUPERIOR: [SUBORDINATE CALLSIGN], THIS IS [SUPERIOR CALLSIGN], SITREP.

Responding to a SITREP Request

If you need a brief moment to gather information, reply:

YOU: “WAIT OUT.”

When ready, call the superior callsign to indicate you are ready to provide the SITREP:

YOU: [SUPERIOR CALLSIGN], THIS IS [YOUR CALLSIGN], SITREP.

Proactive SITREP

If you have urgent or significant updates, you can initiate a SITREP to your superior by calling them first:

YOU: [SUPERIOR CALLSIGN], THIS IS [YOUR CALLSIGN], SITREP

(Note: Subordinate units do not request SITREPs from superiors.)

FM/BS-592 - Give a structured Situation report

Use P.A.T.S. (Position, Activity, Threat, Status) to keep your SITREP clear and concise. Omit any unnecessary details, and focus on what your superior needs to know.

  • PositionWhere are you?
    • by grid reference
    • by named location or waypoint
    • by known landmark
    • by relative position to any of the above
  • ActivityWhat are you doing?
    • e.g. holding, moving, providing overwatch, breaching, etc.
  • ThreatWhat is the enemy doing?
    • Specifically note level of contact or any significant observations or threats.
    • e.g. “No contact,” “Light contact,” “Enemy flanking south,” “Under sniper fire,”  etc.
  • Status - What is your status?
    • Declare “Combat Effective” or “Combat Ineffective.”
    • If you need support, state it clearly;
      • e.g. “Need URGENT medical support,” “Need AT ammo,” “Vehicle disabled,” etc.
      • If not, omit this part altogether.

Remember: Keep it brief. Only include details that affect the bigger picture or require support.
