Master Sergeants provide a high level of technical, organisational  and operational expertise to their Commanding Officer. This includes close monitoring of practice operations, training and education of all persons within the unit under them.

MSGs are technical experts and more training focused than their 1SG counterparts.

They do not exercise the broad responsibility that First Sergeants do within the line units. Many, but not all, Master Sergeants will be selected to serve as First Sergeants.
