Firing the mortar

Once you have calculated your fire elements you set your Charge, ELEV and Azimut (direction in Mils). Fire the mortar and keep track of the time for the “SPLASH” announcement over radio. A forward observer might be able to help you adjust your fire accordingly.

Radio procedures:

There are two different ways the Forward Observer will call for a fire mission:

  • Fire when ready

  • Fire on command

The only difference between the two is when the mortar is able to “pull the trigger”. Fire when ready means, shot as fast as you can. Fire on command means, wait until the Forward Observer tells you to do so, as he might want to coordinate indirect fire with an infantry push or retreat or he wants to make sure that there will not be any friendly fire.
