Updating Aircrews on the situation
After Check-In or whenever the situation in the AO changes, the FAC should provide the air assets with a situation update. This should contain the following items:
Item | MEANING |
---|---|
Threats | Location, type, ranges, etc. about any known or suspected threats to the aircrafts. |
Targets | Information about the targets for the aircraft. For CAS this can be information about e.g. enemies that are likely or known in the AO and that will possibly require the usage of CAS. This is briefed, so the aircraft can get an idea about what weapons to use, which may to spare for later, or if they even have the capabilities for it. For transport this can be information about e.g. expected resupply missions. |
Friendly Forces | Information about currecnt and expected movements of friendly forces and their status. This is important for CAS to avoid friendly fire, as well as transport aircrafts to get an idea about where they generally might be needed for what in the future. |
IDF | Information about the usage of IDF. This must include their position, expected lines of fire (Gun-target-lines) and their possible targets, to mark these as (possible) no fly zones. |
Remarks | Information about anything that isn't covered yet but seems important. This could be visibility, terrain, a more extensive Scheme of Maneuver of the ground forces, other aircrafts, etc. Further, if you are using a Laser Designator you may specify the code it's set to here to save time later on during CAS requests! |
Example:
Threats: We suspect that the southern part of the AO is guarded by MANPADs with and estimated range of 2 km, BREAK.
Targets for a CAS aircraft: Likely targets will be bunkers to the North of the AO as well as any MBTs. Possibly we might also need to engage mechanized or motorized units depending on the AT status of our forces, BREAK.
Targets for a transport aircraft: I would expect that we will need a resupply at Phase Line 2, BREAK.
Friendly Forces: Outlaw is currently moving northwards along the MSR to Mikis FOB, while Phoenix is in contact with one squad inside of Morut, BREAK.
IDF: Hammer is located at Kalae Noowi airfield with gun-target-lines between 190 to 193 degrees. Their primary target is Green Camp Base, BREAK.
Remarks: The visibility on the ground is low due to heavy rain. My Laser Designator is on code 1111.
