Procedure Words

A procedure word is a word or phrase limited to radio telephone procedure used to facilitate communication by conveying information in a condensed standard form. This table outlines proper procedure words (prowords) in UNITAF SOP and their meanings used during radio transmissions. 

 

Core

PROWORD MEANING
THIS IS This transmission is from the station whose designator immediately follows.
MESSAGE A message which requires recording is about to follow. (Transmitted immediately after the call.)
BE ADVISED Reserved for important messages, which must have precedence over routine traffic.
UNKNOWN STATION The identity of the station with whom I am attempting to establish communications is unknown.
PRIORITY Precedence PRIORITY. Reserved for important messages, which must have precedence over routine traffic. This is the highest precedence, which normally assigned to a message of administrative nature.
WAIT 1 I must pause for a few seconds.
WAIT OUT I will come back to you as soon as possible. I do not require a reply.
OUT This is the end of my transmission to you and no answer is required or expected.
ACKNOWLEDGE A directive from the originator requiring the addressee(s) to advise the originator the message is received and understood. This term is normally included in the electronic transmission of orders to ensure the receiving station or person confirms the receipt of the orders.

 

Transmission Control

PROWORD MEANING
BREAK I hereby indicated the separation of the text from other portions of the message.
BREAK BREAK BREAK To eliminate transmission on a network in order to allow a higher-precedence transmission to occur.
RADIO SILENCE Cease transmission immediately. Silence will be maintained until lifted.
RADIO SILENCE LIFTED Silence is lifted. 
RELAY (TO) Transmit this message to all addressee (or addresses immediately following this proword). The address component is mandatory when this proword is used.
RELAY (FROM) The originator of this message is indicated by the address designator immediately following.

 

Indicative Responses

PROWORD MEANING
AFFIRMATIVE Yes
CORRECT You are correct, or what you have transmitted is correct. (when used with READBACKs)
NEGATIVE No
ROGER I have received your last transmission satisfactorily.
WILCO

I have received your signal, understand it and will comply. (To be used only by the addressee. Since the meaning of ROGER is included in that of WILCO, the two prowords are never used together)

 

Specificity

FIGURES Numerals or numbers follow. (Optional)
I READ BACK The following is my response to your instructions to read back.
I SPELL I shall spell the next word phonetically.
MORE TO FOLLOW Transmitting station has additional traffic for the receiving station.
READ BACK Repeat this entire transmission back to me exactly as received.
SAY AGAIN Repeat all of your last transmission. Do not say REPEAT as this is a fire control term.
SPEAK SLOWER Your transmission is at too fast of a speed. Reduce speed of transmission.
WORD AFTER The word of the message to which I have reference is that which follows…
WORD BEFORE The word of the message to which I have reference is that which proceeds…

 

Corrective

PROWORD MEANING
ALL AFTER The portion of the message to which I have referenced is all that which follows.
ALL BEFORE The portion of the message to which I have reference is all that proceeds.
CORRECTION An error has been made in this transmission. Transmission continues with the last word correctly transmitted.
DISREGARD This transmission is in error. Disregard it.
I SAY AGAIN I am repeating transmission or portion indicated.

 

Jargon

Similar to prowords, Jargon are terms used to express certain cirsumstances or situations but are not recognised as procedure words.
