Situation
Background Information
Elements of US Army, ARVN, and MACV-SOG, including LION and SHIELD mortar team, are currently holding Fire Support Base Berchtesgaden, a hilltop outpost deep in South Vietnam. After weeks of minimal contact, intercepted enemy communications indicate imminent Viet Cong movement toward our position at dawn. MACV-SOG teams are present to oversee special operations coordination and support, owing to increased enemy infiltration and recent loss of civilian villages in the AO.
FSB Berchtesgaden now serves as a temporary refuge for displaced civilians seeking aid after their village was destroyed. To the west lies A Luoi outpost, manned by US Army, with FOB3 Mai Loc to the northeast and FOB2 Kon Tum to the south, both held by joint US and ARVN forces. With little warning, all units must prepare for a probable large-scale attack: reinforce defenses, mine approach routes, and protect civilians and wounded. The mission’s priority is to hold the perimeter and landing zone, repelling enemy sappers and mass assaults until extraction or relief can be coordinated.

Mission
TaskingThe unit is tasked with rapidly preparing for a likely large-scale VC assault on FSB Berchtesgaden. This includes reinforcing defensive positions, mining likely enemy approach routes, and safeguarding both civilians and wounded personnel within the perimeter. The primary objective is to hold the defensive line and landing zone against enemy sappers and massed attacks until extraction or relief forces arrive.
End-state
On mission completion, the friendly force will have held FSB Berchtesgaden against enemy attacks, maintaining control of the perimeter and landing zone, with all remaining personnel and civilians prepared for extraction or secure for continued defense. Key positions will be intact, enemy forces repelled or delayed, and the unit ready for follow-on orders.
In the event of mission failure, the unit will conduct an organized withdrawal, evacuating as many personnel and civilians as possible while denying the enemy use of the outpost. The priority is to prevent capture or destruction of key assets and ensure the survival of friendly forces through orderly fallback to secondary positions or extraction.
Execution
Commander's IntentThe intent for this mission is to hold FSB Berchtesgaden at all costs. Ensuring that the enemy does not breach the perimeter.
Tasks and Sequencing
LION Will be responsible for securing all entrances / weak points of the FSB. Using mortars, mines and other traps to ensure the perimeter of the base. LION Will create fall back points from the perimeter in case of perimeter breach, however we will hold the line as long as possible.
