FM/BG-1540.V1.00 - Using clock positions for target a threat communication

Clock positions provide a fast and intuitive method of describing object or threat locations relative to the aircraft. This method is often faster than providing exact compass bearings during time-sensitive situations.

Clock Position Usage

  • Use clock positions to communicate relative location of:
  • Incoming missiles or threats
  • Visual sightings of airfields, aircraft, or other points of interest
  • Any rapidly developing aerial or situational events

Communication Standard

  • Imagine the aircraft is the centre of a clock face.
  • Report objects using the nearest clock position relative to the aircraft’s forward-facing direction.

Example:

  • “Enemy aircraft, 2 o’clock.”
  • “Airfield, 10 o’clock.”
