Give a situation report

1. POSITION - Where are you?
   • FM/BS-894 - Transmit a location during a CAS request
2. ACTIVITY - What are you doing?
   • Direction and speed of movement, if any
   • Any other relevant action your element is performing (rearming, providing overwatch,…)
3. THREAT - What is the enemy doing?
   • Size of the enemy
   • Pressure the enemy is excerting on your element
   • Any special threats (vehicles, heavy MG, sniper,…)
4. STATUS - What is your status?
   • Estimate of how long your element can sustain the current pressure excerted by the enemy
   • If your element is no longer able to sustain the pressure, declare “Combat ineffective”
   • If you need support (AT, medical, repair, rearm,…) state it clearly

    • e.g. “Need URGENT medical support,” “Need AT ammo,” “Vehicle disabled,” etc. 
    • If not, omit this part altogether.

Remember: Keep it brief. Only include details that affect the bigger picture or require support.

For each element of the SITREP below, examples of response options are provided for each of the 4 components, You must respond to all 4 components but only notable information should be included, and only to the extent needed to answer the relevant question posed by that component.

• Position – Where you are.
  • by grid reference

  • by relative position to any of the above
• Activity – What you're doing & what the enemy is doing.
  • Position you are at or moving to
  • Other activity (such as providing overwatch, breaching etc)
  • Level of contact if any (or none)
  • Any notable activity of the enemy (such as retreating, surrendering, flanking etc)
• Status – Combat effectiveness, ammo, casualties, equipment
  • Is your element combat effective or ineffective?
  • Ammo, Casualties, Equipment in accordance with FM/BS-589 - Give a structured ACE report
    • or confirmation that ACE report will follow
• Objective – Progress on mission & next planned action.
  • What is the status of your current tasking?
  • What is your next planned action on current tasking, or after completion?

When giving a SITREP, remember P.A.S.O. (Position, Activity, Status, Objective.) 

• Keep it brief and to the point. 
• Your superior needs to know how your situation affects the bigger picture and whether you need support or adjustments to the plan.

• An ACE report if an up to minute one is available, or confirmation that ACE will follow shortly after the SITREP

• Any desired support that the team needs such as, but not limited to: Suppressive fire from other team, CAS, pick up, vehicle cover, medical aid etc.

6. Recommendations (Optional)

• Any recommendations to the leader based on local knowledge. These should be small suggestions only, not telling the leader how to do their job, or reorganizing the whole ORBAT! Examples include: “Recommend 2 moves to our right when moving up for better cover” or “Recommend we reorient and attack from the East given the MGs we can see” etc.
