The support engineer is a generalised role providing all manner of support requirements to front-line troops, but is typically detached from convential units, it is usually attached to a support detachment or headquarters element. Typical roles are: explosive disposal, building and construction, maintenance and repair, re-fueling and re-arming, logistical re-supply operations by land, sea or air - as well as the construction and planning of defensive structures. By this virtue, the Support Engineer must have experience in all of these things.
The Support Chief oversees the provision of all manner of support requirements to front-line troops from outside the area of operations, typically detached from convential units, a number of Engineers and Supporting roles report to the Support Chief to enable building and construction, maintenance and repair, re-fueling and re-arming, logistical re-supply operations by land, sea or air - as well as the construction and planning of defensive structures. The Support Chief does not have authority in the area of operations, only outside of it and therefore follows the direction of the Senior Ground Commander.
