FM/BS-481.V3.01 - Approach helicopters safely
Skill

When approaching a helicopter, keep in mind the following factors:

  • Avoid crossing the door gunner firing arcs
  • Avoid getting near the tail rotor, especially the side of the tail that the tail rotor is on
  • Avoid approaching and standing directly in front of the helicopter, as this is the direction in which the helicopter will move when taking off
  • Be mindful of the clearance between your head and the main rotor, especially on uneven terrain

In practice, this means:

  • Approach helicopters that load from the side from the side, preferably slightly from the rear
  • Approach helicopters that load from the rear directly from the rear

FM/BS-481.V2.00 - Enter helicopters correctly
Skill
  • When entering a helicopter the player must enter from the sides, specifically from the rear side at a 45 degree angle to the helicopter. This is due to the firing arcs of any guns in use in the helicopter facing sideways (and often forwards) and the dangerous tail rotor at the back.
  • Additionally, the front is also considered a danger area, due to the likelihood that the main rotor(s) will dip towards the ground at the front as the helicopter lifts off and attempts to move forwards.
  • Some helicopters such as the Chinook are only enter-able from the back. In these instances, players should move to the rear of the helicopter and avoid the front as that is where the door gunners are positioned and firing in most cases. Any helicopters that mount from the rear, tend not to have rear-rotors and are therefore safe to approach from the rear.
