FM/BG-1812 - When to stay mounted vs. dismount
Guide

Unlike many traditional cavalry roles, scout cavalry elements are expected to dismount when the situation requires. Mounted and dismounted posture should be selected based on terrain, speed requirements, and observation needs.

Stay Mounted When:

  • Moving through large, open areas.
  • Speed and rapid repositioning are required.
  • Long-range observation is sufficient.

Dismount When:

  • Operating in close, restrictive, or urban terrain.
  • Stealth and reduced vehicle signature are needed.
  • Detailed, close-range observation or precision action is required.

FM/BS-1813 - Conduct dismounted reconnaissance from a vehicle
Skill
  1. Halt the vehicle in a covered position.
  2. Establish all-round security.
  3. Confirm the crew understands the task, direction of movement, and actions on contact.
  4. Dismount while maintaining security.
    1. The gunner dismounts last once dismounted security is established.
  5. Move forward to conduct the reconnaissance task.
  6. Observe, identify, and record significant findings.
  7. Return to the vehicle position.
  8. Conduct a brief consolidation of information.
    1. Pass any critical information to the vehicle commander.
  9. Remount in order.
    1. The gunner remounts first and establishes observation and fire arcs while the commander and driver complete mounting.
  10. Confirm crew readiness.
  11. Resume movement.
