FM/BP-889.V1.02 - Promotion following punitive demotion

Following a punitive reduction in rank (demotion) usually instigated through FM/BP-255 - Violations of the Code of Conduct. Upon demotion, the member is ineligible for any promotion for a minimum period of three active months (ATIU).

Following this mandatory freeze, the time requirement (ATIG/CATIG) to be eligible for promotion depends on the member's conduct while serving in the lower rank. If the member maintains Good Conduct In Grade (GCIG, as defined in FM/BG-235 - Ranks in UNITAF), they must complete 50% of the standard ATIG/CATIG with GCIG requirement specified for the target rank(s) until they reach the originally held rank (or next rank, if demotion covers multiple grades). However, if the member fails to maintain GCIG during this period, they must satisfy the full standard ATIG/CATIG without GCIG requirement for the target rank.

Satisfying this modified time requirement does not negate the need to meet all other standard prerequisites for the rank, such as total ATIU, operational hours, and any specific NCO status requirements outlined in FM/G50 - Ranks and Promotions. The member must be formally notified of these specific conditions at the time of their demotion.
