FM/BS-1303 - Takeoff in a rotary aircraft

Takeoff safely:

  • Minimize time going purely vertical
  • Gain horizontal momentum as soon as practical
  • Smoothly transition to forward flight

FM/BS-1304 - Land a rotary aircraft on flat terrain
Skill

Land on flat terrain:

  • Flare to lose horizontal momentum just before landing
  • Level out the aircraft to prevent a tail rotor strike
  • Lower the collective to a safe descent rate for the final couple of meters
  • After touching the ground, keep the collective lowered until engine shut-off or taking off

Fly an approach to a landing area:

  • Maintain a constant rate of deceleration
  • Minimize time at slow speeds
  • Maintain the preferred altitude for the given environment
  • Do not exceed the ability of the airframe to shed forward speed
