Messaging

During radio transmissions different types of messages need to be sent and recieved by participating callsigns.

Short messages

Short messages are any transaction that take 10 seconds or less to transmit.
They usually follow simple IDENT procedures and are transmitted in full without BREAK.

For example

1-2: 1-0, this is 1-2.

1-0: 1-2, this is 1.

1-2: We are pinned by fire from our South South West.

1-0: ROGER, OUT.

Long messages

If sending a long message, which is roughly any transmission that takes longer than 10 seconds, this should be broken up into several parts, to make it easier for the recipient to follow.

This can be done with the procedure word BREAK followed by a short pause to give the other station a chance to interrupt you, if something wasn’t understood.

Example - BREAK

1-2: 1-0, this is 1-2.

1-0: 1-2, this is 1-0.

1-2: We are pinned by fire from our South South West, BREAK. (Short pause) We've got 2 enemy Squads at FIGURES 0-6-9-2-1-3.

1-0: ROGER, OUT

Further, if you are sending a message that needs recording, e.g. writing it down, you may indicate this with the procedure word MESSAGE upon establishing contact Afterwards whenever you make a pause, ask for acknowledgement to confirm the other station is still following.

Example - MESSAGE

1-2: 1-0, this is 1-2, MESSAGE.

1-0: 1-2, this is 1-0 ready to receive.

1-2: We are pinned by fire from our South South West, ACKNOWLEDGE.

1-0: ROGER so far.

1-2: we've got 2 enemy Squads at FIGURES 0-6-9-2-1-3.

1-0: ROGER, OUT.
